A 9-month-old born with the HIV virus may have been cured of the ailment after treatments from doctors that began just four hours after her birth, Reuters reports.
“The child … has become HIV-negative,” said Dr. Deborah Persaud, a pediatrics specialist with the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
The child, born outside of Los Angeles, is currently on a treatment of a three-drug cocktail of anti-AIDS medication.
The young girl is the second case of this type, following an earlier instance in Mississippi where a newborn with the HIV virus may have been brought into remission by doctors who administered antiretrovial drugs in the first hours of life.
